Canadian Ethnic Media Association Celebrates 40thAnniversary at annual Awards Gala
The Canadian Ethnic Media Association (CEMA) celebrates its 40th Anniversary at a large, congratulatory Awards Gala on Friday, November 9, 2018. The much- anticipated annual event takes place this year at the Westin Prince Hotel, 900 York Mills Road, in Toronto. CEMA is a national organization, and will host members and winners from across the country, as well as many notable special guests.
The 40th annual CEMA Awards Gala will again recognize journalistic excellence in the categories of print, radio, television, internet, podcasting, documentary and innovation. The prestigious lifetime achievement award, named posthumously after the founder of CEMA, the Sierhey (Khmara) Ziniak Award, will be given to John Honderich, C.M., O.Ont. Chair of Torstar Corporation for his dedication to Multiculturalism and its expression and reflection through media.
CEMA supports the principles of Canadian citizenship, multiculturalism and the right offree expression without ethnocentric bias. At the turn of the 21st Century, CEMA evolved out of the Canadian Ethnic Journalists and Writers Club (CEJWC), founded in 1978 by respected journalist Sierhey Ziniak. He arrived in Canada in 1949, and immediately organized journalists and community leaders to create news vehicles that spoke to their constituents in their mother tongue. The movement has grown to include many ethnic groups who come to Canada to enjoy the right to free speech in their language of comfort.
Today, Canada’s ethnic media thrives in all aspects of news gathering and distribution at a time when the world-wide industry is facing unprecedented challenges. As CEMA celebrates its milestone 40th Anniversary, its membership will come together to salute its past achievements and to toast its future viability.
